Most of these are chain stores, with highly standardized menus. And
some chains like the Outback Steakhouse, which sells appetizers with
calorie totals in excess of 1,800 for a single Bloomin' Onion (according to
one conservative nutritionist's estimate) that do not officially tabulate
calorie totals by official, in-house personnel will also not have to post
their menu's nutritional data.

As the measure currently stands, Starbucks will have to post the
relatively miniscule calorie count of its plain coffees, but the Outback
Steakhouse and the corner Mom n' Pop greasy spoon, or a high-class French
restaurant serving fatty duck a la orange can sell their cuisine as health
food. More consumer information is needed-to truly allow consumers to make
informed choices, all restaurants should have to post calorie totals. Yes,
not all of these calorie totals will be accurate. The restaurants can
inform the consumers of this, or post a calorie range, within acceptable
limits. But consumers should have some idea of how much they are
consuming.

Of course, this proposal will take a long time to implement. But
until consumers are properly informed, they cannot take proper
responsibility for their health. Yes, it will be expensive. But so are the
health consequences of obesity. And as the measure currently stands, there
is now a disincentive for restaurants to calculate their food's calories,
because then they will not have to post these totals publicly on the menu.
