Technology in Reverse Logistics

Reverse logistics has developed to become one of the most important elements in supply chain management because of its benefits. As a result, reverse logistics has become a concept and process that manufacturers and retailers cannot ignore. Given the advantages of reverse logistics in the supply chain, manufacturers and retailers have enhanced investments in technology to enhance their reverse logistics systems. These huge investments in technology to improve reverse logistics systems have been made in automated material handling equipment, barcodes, electronic data interchange, automated return tracking, radio frequency, and automated returns entry in many downstream segments in supply chain (Hawks, 2006).

The increased investments in technology to enhance reverse logistics systems have been influenced and driven by trends occurring in software. The recent trends in the software industry have been revolved around development of programs with easy-to-use characteristics, use of natural languages, and the increased utilization of general-purpose application packages. Moreover, software in today's society has too much flexibility that contributes to their utilization in everyday communication. The flexibility is enhancing ease-of-use since users do not really need tutorials or special training in order to learn how to use software. This has in turn resulted in normality in the use of software that makes its meaningful and friendly to users.

Actually, modern distributors and suppliers attempt to lessen retailer returns though the utilization of just-in-time delivery (Hawks, 2006). Since retailers tend to overestimate demand because of lack of adequate resources to forecast cautiously, software manufacturers have enhanced their efforts towards developing applications that can help retailers in this process and ensure their accessibility on the retailer shelves. Furthermore, software manufacturers usually agree to provide those products in a manner where the cost of a software box is relatively low in comparison to the price. The other major trend in software in relation to reverse logistics is the release of more software titles. This trend promotes increase in returns since the product life cycles of the software titles are contracting. Given the lower risk associated with software use, some retailers tend to accept software bought elsewhere and incorporate them in their reverse logistics systems. In contrast, some manufacturers and retailers attempt to lessen returns and enhance inventory turnover through re-evaluating channel relationships or links.
