" Obviously, I personally wouldn't expect Rita Dove to stick with strict literary conventions without part of her poems' charm to be lost.

It is interesting to note her attitude towards her African-American identity, as well as towards her presence as a woman poet. Asked in an interview whether she saw herself as an African-American poet, she answered that she was an African-American and she was a poet, so that altogether probably made her an African-American poet after all.

On the other hand, as critics pointed out, "she often approaches the question of being black and female from an intensely personal perspective." Her openness towards her racial identity is also in close connection to her marriage and to the resulting child, who bares characteristics of both parents. In her poem, Genetic Expedition, she points out that "my child has / her father's hips, his hair / like the miller's daughter, combed gold. / Though her lips are mine, housewives / stare when we cross the parking lot because of that ghostly profusion." After all, her child is a woman with different characteristics.

Overall, Rita Dove admits that "there are no easy answers to questions of racial and gender identity.
" As most sensitive subjects, the racial and gender identity issue is something that has many aspects.

As a personal evaluation and opinion from the poems that I have read, Rita Dove is a remarkable poet both because of the freedom she has in the poetic form, unconstrained by specific poetic forms, and because of her limitless imagination. This is simply overwhelming. Any simple object, any simple form may become a source of inspiration and, in Rita's eyes, may take up different forms and different shapes. I have occasionally mentioned her Surrealistic way of seeing this. Although we shouldn't necessarily include her in this category of artists, some of the images that come out of her poems are so rich that may send towards the respective current.

Rita Dove has one of the freshest poetic minds of the 20th century and has thoroughly proven herself as one of the most enthusiastic literary minds of our times. Practically turning her back on no subject, she enjoys enchanting her readers with the richness of her verse......
