It was not easy to go to a university at that time. It was actually safer for some Blacks to stay in their neighborhood with what they were familiar with, than to go to college. This scenario here can be compared directly to Robert Frost's poem. Just as the narrator in "The Road Not Taken" makes the difficult choice of going one path and not going to the other, the same can be applied to Langston Hughes' poem where the narrator also had to make the same choice before entering the university. He had the difficult choice of staying on the streets where crime and illegal activity was pretty prevalent, or going to college where discrimination and racial profiling would be inevitable. Both relatively unpleasant ideas, both choices to be made, and once one choice was made, the narrator could not help but to think about the other choice not made. Although not directly expressed, it is implied that he reflects on his way from school to his house, his surroundings, and what could have been, given his limited choices as a Black young man living in Harlem.

Although the poems carry a similarity in the messages that they give, they do differ in some ways. First of all, it is quite obvious that they both are dealing with topics that are quite different from each other.

Langston Hughes writes about a social and political issue that was very prevalent during the time that this poem was written. He reflects on what the racism that he was experience made him stand out and different from others, while still receiving the same education than his White peers who deemed themselves as being better than he was. He writes about learning from each other regardless of the color of the skin, age, or even socioeconomic backgrounds. Robert Frost on the other hand writes about a much more broad topic. Reading it literally, he is talking about the choice in geographical location. Going either left or right will literally take him on a completely different path, and although he tries to look ahead, sort of cheating in a way, he cannot see anything that distinguishes one path from the other, that necessarily makes one path better or worse than the other.

Both poems in themselves were very impactful for the time that they were respectively published. What is more astounding about their existence, is that they are still very well renowned and relatable in today's society. Although they are each very informative, each are open to individual interpretation......
