Thus, I was faced with a situation, which involved an opportunity cost irrespective of the choice made.

This realization finally led me to exercising my critical thinking ability. In other words, I followed a process of compiling and organizing relevant data and thoughts, which I felt would enable logical thinking and a well thought out decision. On completion of this exercise, I realized that I would necessarily have to seek further guidance in solving my problem since the alternatives I faced continued to be equally attractive.

It was at this point in time that I realized the need for a good decision making model. With this knowledge, I set out to research various decision making models, finally settling for the rational model, which seemed to be most appropriate to the situation I faced. Indeed, I found the rational model to be highly effective since it is based on an economic view of decision making and is, therefore, grounded on goals/objectives, alternatives, consequences and optimality (Lahti, 1996).

In fact, it was the application of the rational model that helped me finally determine that a college education would be the optimal choice since it would ultimately lead to maximum utility. I reached this conclusion fairly easily once the rational model showed me that the path to arriving at one correct perception of a problem or decision lay in using a logical process of evaluating alternatives and their consequences, always bearing the defined goals in mind (Lahti, 1996). Indeed, it was this logical, sequential process of decision making, which led me to the realization that a High School degree would eventually restrict my job mobility and career options whereas a college degree would be the key to opening many more opportunities in the future.

Thus, my personal experience has hopefully served as an example, which demonstrates that the use of critical thinking and decision making models can result in sound rational reasoning and effective decisions......
