When women participating in the antislavery movement in the nineteen century discovered that while their leadership and oratory were often eagerly sought out, they were not allowed to use a pulpit or church platform as a place from which to speak, their consciousness as well as their level of indignation were raised. As feminism gained momentum at the end of the nineteen and the beginning of the twentieth century, some religious groups saw the incongruity and permitted women o head churches as ordained ministers.

Aside from this issue, there has been other response though why the role of women in religious community is sought to be improved, such as by ordaining them as religious leaders having the same level as the priests.
