The second involves attempts to increase the functioning of the persons and delay or prevent a relapse. To accomplish these goals the treatment occurs in three phases.

In the first phase, attention is given to bringing the symptoms under control. The patient may be dangerous, to others or to themselves. In this phase, medication is utilized which can greatly reduce the symptoms. When the symptoms have been repressed, the second phase begins, where attempts are made to stabilize the patient. At this time, it is possible for the patient to have moderate symptoms and to relapse. It is critical at this stage that the symptoms are further reduced so that the patient can progress toward the final phase of maintenance. The maintenance phase places emphasis on long-term recovery.

This phase engages all the available therapeutic measures. The patient may receive medication, while engaging in supportive therapy.
