HR and the Use of Social Media

The technology we use everyday is developing rapidly. One of the greatest trends in technology today is the use of social media. Social media is prevalent in our daily lives and hundreds of thousands of users log on each day. Today, even businesses have begun to tap into the use of social media in regards to tailoring cost effect marketing campaigns to reach their consumer base. However, one area that has not seen a whole lot of research in how social media can be used is in Human Resources. HR is an important part of how businesses function, yet it has been slow to adopt social media as a cost effective way to achieve HR strategies. Thus, there are gaps in regards to how HR might be able to adopt social media practices as a way to improve hiring tactics and other HR strategies that are used in modern business firms and organizations.

Although many facets of the business world have already adopted social media techniques, HR has been one department that has seen little research or adaptation of this new technology. Very few studies have involved understanding how social media can be used by HR departments to enhance their operating practices. The bulk of the research on professional business uses of social media is concerned with marketing campaigns and how small and start up businesses can use social media as a powerful and cheap technique to reach their consumer base. Yet, HR does not really concern itself with marketing, but more of internal employee relations and the acquisition of new employees into existing firms and organizations. Thus, there are clear gaps in regards to how some social media practices can enhance the operations of HR departments in modern firms.
