This chapter offers a number of important elements and strategies that will help incorporate meaningful changes. Some of the characteristics of students with high-incidence disabilities include poor reading skills as well as poor organizational skills. These characteristics in particular might affect the quality of completing tasks and assignments. In turn, not undertaking such tasks, or undertaking such tasks improperly has a likelihood of having a negative impact on academic attainment. An important to remember is the PROJECT strategy, which has proven to be efficacious in enhancing the rate of, as also the quality of completing the assignments finishing tasks assigned to the students. This strategy encompasses seven steps. The first step encompasses the preparation of forms, which can be both weekly and monthly schedules for studying. Secondly, there is the step of recording the assignment by placing it on the sheet and seeking guidance of the teacher regarding any aspect that might not seem clear. The third step is organization, which is performed at the end of the day. This step encompasses splitting the task into different parts, projecting the number of study sessions that will be required, scheduling such sessions and taking home the materials required. The fourth step encompasses attending to the assignment and the fifth one engaging in the task and assignment. The sixth step is checking the work done while the last phase of the strategy encompasses submission of the assignment and task.

A key element pointed out is that a teacher must have the capacity to ascertain the range of general strategies that are applicable to the teacher's specific discipline. The inference of this is that teachers of various content areas have to understand the most relevant strategies towards successful completion, realization of the vital features, and develop the capability to communicate them in an expressive manner to students. One of the main ways delineated in the chapter is that teachers ought to decrease the demands of learning the content in order to direct the attention of the students to master the strategy efficiently. Once these students comprehend the scopes of the strategy, the teacher can increase the instructional demands. As indicated, the most efficacious teaching techniques and materials are those that enhance the active learning of the student by applying learning cues.

I am able to understand my population now because I have learnt numerous adjustment as well as modification techniques employed in the pursuit of education offered in the classroom. This is helpful and beneficial to all the students, and especially the students that have mild disabilities to cultivate the suitable use of study skills and strategies for learning.

I have come to learn and understand that these particular skills will enable the students to be efficacious all the way through their secondary and postsecondary levels. I now have a better understanding of my population of children with disabilities; I have understood that to expect them to learn and understand what is being taught in the general education classroom, it is imperative for me to invest in substantial and quality time towards educating them on the precise ways which they can use for learning. For instance, I have come to understand that the student with disabilities might be willing and ready to learn the strategies, but I will have to assist them to remember the steps of the strategies and also remind them on how to apply them. In particular, I have also come to understand that solely providing directions and teachings on an assignment completion strategy will be inadequate especially if the student does not have the skills to organize, execute, and complete the assignment.

Chapter 9

The key elements learnt in the chapter encompass an understanding of social skills and the kinds of problems associated with them. In particular, social skills are the behavioral skills and practices that enable and simplify social responses (including school performances), helping individuals to deal with stressful conditions. Some of the relevant issues in the context appear as account performance deficits, fluency deficits, and acquisition deficits., The lesson offers three methods to teachers for measuring the various facets of the social capabilities of a student. These techniques consist of rating scales, sociometry, and direct observation. In particular, implementing these methods is beneficial, as it has indicated a level of efficacy for students that have high-incidence disabilities. Another key element in the chapter is the effective behavioral support program. This instructional method has proven to be efficacious towards altering the social ecology of middle schools. In this particular system, the emphasis is on establishing behavioral anticipations between students, and between students and teachers across the school level. This becomes fruitful if all the members of the school adhere to similar social behavioral directions and significances.
