We know this in theory, however, reading about these very innocent families and the things that they have been force to endure makes it even more important to me that the nation begin healing and removing the fears that cause this type of behavior against innocent people.

The second and more far reaching point that the book makes is that nobody is safe from suspicion of this mindset is allowed to be continued. Regardless of the situation there may come a time in which each of us falls into a group or groups of people who are suddenly being eyed suspiciously.

In the past five years the Middle Eastern immigrants and descendants have faced the focus of the nation's evil suspicious eye. Before them the Blacks took their turn at bat and in addition to them there have been periods in American history in which Irish, Italian, and Spanish people have been eyed and suspected of being undesirable simply based on past transgressions of those who looked like they did.

There is no way to ignore the fact that the nation has become a nation of fear and suspicion and that nobody is safe from scrutiny at one time or another in the future.

I don't believe the nation should continue on the path that it is on. It seems that we are coming dangerously close to developing the same mindset that allowed Hitler to come into power. It has not taken much for the government to convince the American people that the treatment of the Middle Eastern immigrants in this country was acceptable even though it is not treatment that any of us would allow for ourselves. It scares me to think how much like the Jewish were treated that the Middle Eastern immigrants were treated and that the American public stood behind it in the same way that society stood behind Hitler.

This book coupled with the class text has convinced me that the nation is headed in a very dangerous direction of we do not go back to the equal treatment of all and the refusal to let fear turn us into the very animals we are trying to capture......
