United States vs. Soviet Union

The Cold War, although over now, had a demonstrative effect on the United States culture and political sphere. Indeed, some of those effects are still felt in the United States to this very day. However, this report will focus on three political and social effects that were rendered during the height of the Cold War. This report will explore three political effects and three social effects. While the United States came out fine from the Cold War, there were/are some effects that were extensive and wholly negative for the country then and/or now.

One political effect that was rise of paranoia-like questioning found during the McCarthyism era. McCarthy acted under the premise and idea that a good number of Communists had infiltrated the United States government. Even President Truman was part of this framework as he insisted on background checks for all government officials (U.S. History, 2014)

. Another effect in the political sphere was that both the United State and the Soviet Union raced to construct a hydrogen bomb that would make the atom bomb of World War II seem tame. Both countries developed the bomb by the 1950's

. Third, and tangential to the second, is that both countries used bombs and other mass warfare threats as a deterrent and way to fight the other country during the Cold War.
There were also fights and threats through proxies like Cuba, Afghanistan and others. All of the above led to a boom in storm shelters and emergency procedures being created and pushed out to society and the school systems.

As for societal effects of the Cold War, the aforementioned building of bombing shelters and the like could also be pointed to as a societal effect. However, there were many others beyond that. One dimension was the poetry of the day. Examples of these poents included Dwight McDonald. There were also movies like "Without a Cause" and "The Wild Ones." There were also other societal uprisings and protests such….....
