Industry



The selected industry I am entering is the steel industry. This industry is a robust one which is involved in enormous monetary transactions every year, practically since the formula for rendering steel (the Bessemer process) was discovered by Thomas Bessemer (Misa, 1995). The steel industry closely coincides with the manufacturing industry, since steel is utilized in the manufacturing of a number of different products and services (Ruddick, 2016). Therefore, those who work in this industry oftentimes do so in a manufacturing capacity. This industry is also intrinsically related to the supply chain industry, for the simple fact numerous companies need steel.



I am interested in joining this industry for a number of different reasons. Most likely the capital reason is that I have long been enamored with steel. In particular, I am attracted to its most salient qualities. It is light yet durable, and able to provide the foundation for numerous applications within the manufacturing vertical. Moreover, I am intensely interested in the steel making process. I first became cognizant of this process while learning about it during a United States history course I took in high school.



3. There are multiple positive and negative trends that can affect the steel industry over the next one to 10 years.
Globalization has the potential to affect this industry in both ways, positively and negatively. By attaining resources cheaper in underdeveloped countries, company can pay employees less. However, there are also possibilities to work overseas due to globalization and to expand one's professional network in the process, which is certainly positive. Additionally, the advance of information technology can negatively impact this industry by taking away jobs from manufacturing and transferring them to IT.

Career Path



1. There are a multitude of career paths one can select within the steel industry. More than likely, however, I will begin my journey into this industry with an internship. I would ideally like to intern at a factory in which steel is constructed. This way, I would be sure to learn the process of creating steel, which is a value to anyone hoping to pursue a long-term career in this field (such as myself). After attaining an entry-level position with the company for which I intern -- or possibly another, depending on what sort of opportunities are available, I would like a managerial position to lead the company someday.
