Bargh notes that subliminal messages are "outrageous" and "frightening" because they represent "attempts to control people's actions" and therefore consumers have every right to be concerned (p. 1).

Subliminal advertising is often viewed within the overall context of marketing tactics. Flashing a word over and over again, below conscious awareness, might not make a difference in consumer behavior or political preferences.
