SUNDIATA THE EPIC

There are several versions of Sundiata the Epic, but most of the stories are basically the same. Sundiata was the son of the Buffalo. Sundiata had many names and fit the characteristics of each of those names. Sundiata was born with a handicap, but he worked to overcome it and to gain back his throne. The character of Sundiata is one of bravery and courage. The story of Sundiata is one that entertains the reader rather he/she is a child or an adult.

The story begins with Sundiata's father telling him that he was destined to be a leader. The father died after telling the son what he expected from him. Sundiata and his mother are banished from the kingdom. The sadness of his mother crying motivated him to make a decision that changed his life. He was willing to work to overcome his handicap. Some people do not have the courage and strength to overcome an illness or disease. However, Sundiata was determined that he would walk. His character at this part of the story totally shows his determination to try to accomplish the wishes of his father and mother. He was obedient and caring.

He asked his brother to get two iron rods. He began using the iron rods to strengthen his legs. "With all of his strength, he pulled up on the iron bars and his legs started to lengthen.

Sweat trickled down his face that was wrapped in an expression of determination. Within minutes, the child was standing on his own two feet" (Sundiata 4).

Once Sundiata began to walk, he started building strength and courage. He wanted to take his rightful place in his kingdom, but there were still problems to face. Sassourma was jealous and hateful toward Sundiata and totally banished him and his mother out of the kingdom. However, he was even more determined. "I am going to conquer you after I gain power, and I will gain my rightful throne of Mali. You just watch" (Sundiata 6). Against all odds his determination never detoured from his decision. This shows strength of character of Sundiata and the ability to not give up or become depressed even when times were bad.

When Sundiata's mother died, he was even more determined to fight a battle to get his kingdom. This shows ambition and determination. Never once does Sundiata think that he cannot eventually win the battle. He is continually growing strong physically and mentally as he gets ready to go to battle.
