New-Hire orientation process for a home health agency in La Mesa. CA

A needs assessment survey is "a way of asking group or community members what they see as the most important needs of that group or community" ("Section 7," 2015). The purpose of my needs assessment is to improve the screening process required for new hires at my home health agency. I want to know what skills and professional qualifications are required to function at an optimal level. I also would like to know what aspects of the training and orientation process were most useful for current nurses and what need to be improved.

I will submit a questionnaire to the registered nurses currently working at the organization to determine the proficiencies they deem to be most useful on a day-to-day basis. The assessment will be quantitative in nature and include a checklist of different specific tangible skills, like rotating a patient in bed to prevent bedsores, IV care, and wound care to more intangible skills like cultural competency and dealing with family members. The nurses will also be asked to rate different aspects of their training. There will be opportunities to rate a list of proposed changes to the hiring and orientation process.

The nurses will also rate their own qualifications, such as having a higher degree or experience with geriatric populations, in terms of how helpful these were when dealing with the current population served by the agency.

Potential barriers to data collection include the restriction of time: many nurses have very little time on their hands and may be unwilling to submit to a questionnaire. Using an Internet-based survey sent to the nurse's email address will increase compliance because of ease of use. Also, providing a small incentive such as the chance to win a gift card might increase the likelihood of the target population volunteering to take the questionnaire. As well as asking nurses to check various skills on a list, the question items will also ask the nurses to rate various assessment items from 1-10 using a Likert scale, with 1 being very infrequent/not very necessary to 10 being very frequent/necessary.
