Sustainability has emerged as one of the most important aspects of project management, which implies that project managers need to assume leadership roles and demonstrated vested interest in the organization and society. While project managers should not necessarily be the smartest people in a project, they need to be competent and innovative with regards to exploring ideas or generating alternative solutions to lessen or rework waste, job elimination, and harmful pollutants. Given their role in providing technical expertise in projects, project managers play an important role in sustainability.

The role of project managers in sustainability is defining and implementing projects in a responsible and holistic manner as possible. According to Vrecko & Lebe (2013), project managers and project team members are faced with the need to define and execute projects in a holistic and responsible manner since they are responsible drivers in project implementation (p.562). During this process of defining and implementing projects in a responsible and holistic manner as possible, project managers should made decisions objectively rather than subjectively because they cannot predict all probable important alternatives when pursuing the best solution. Therefore, project managers play a crucial role in sustainability through objective thinking that is characterized by systemic approach.
Objective thinking by project managers helps create sustainability of projects through holistic consideration of phenomena, concepts, and events across all important perspectives and their relations rather than a single viewpoint alone.

The performance metrics to integrate into the project planning to promote compliance with sustainability standards include the interests of the organization and society. The other performance metrics include achievement of pre-defined demands, logical use of available and limited resources, and impact of the project on the society.

Measuring Project Success

Generally, all projects need to have some measure of adherence to required standards and customer expectations regardless of the selected technique. In light of this need, project managers to initiate key performance indicators to deal with internal and external results or outcomes. Apart from initiating key performance indicators, project managers need to take actions towards ensuring appropriate measures are defined. This process helps in enhancing the practicality of the measurement technique, its integration with project administrative tools, and ensuring its administration does not generate dysfunctional behaviors of project members.
