Sustainable Fashion

Purchasing sustainable garments is a challenge for everyone when fast fashion is so common. The labors in fast fashion can hardly afford the clothes they make while many consume fast fashion in a problematic way. Fashion industries need more transparency to educate the purchasing decision of individuals. Fast fashion not only is polluting and creating so much waste to our world; it is also taking away the basic human right of low income workers. To design something is not just about choosing a fabric and a print that is appealing but also needs to map out the production and economic strategy. What appear to be beautiful to us may have hidden an ugly story behind it. According to the United Nations, clothing is the fundamental principal of a person's dignity, beside shelter, food, and other essential needs. When the consumption of clothing is placed on the balance against human population, the amount of clothing that are being produced on Earth and the negative impacts on the environment is enormous, and the amount is getting higher as the year progresses. Sustainability and ethical fashion has become social responsibility. The duty of fashion industry is not to create inequality in labors and impoverish the environment, it is to solve problems and create an industry where money is spent to meet the needs and to improve our global problems.

I am starting a pre-thesis concept collection that is inspired by sustainability. The goal of my collection is to avoid the common issues that the fashion industries produce on our environment. The materials that make up my clothes are synthetic fabrics. Fast fashion and giant retailers are gaining more power and reputation over other brands and designers. That is the starting point of my concept collection, I began sketching out garments that would be considered as versatile and that could be mixed and matched in multiple ways to create different looks without the need to buy several garments and clothing that would have a short life, as almost everything do today. And I also feel like when I am designing a collection, it is very important to map out what materials that I am going to use. Since this is a pre-thesis concept collection, no actual garments need to be made from the illustrations that I have done, so I took wild approach in terms of selecting fabrics. I am using eco friendly synthetic fabrics, such as cotton leather blend, and fibers made out of fungus that can be disposed when not needed.

Due to the rapid growth of fast fashion and mass consumption, it has completely changed the way of how fashion has started in ancient human times. At the beginning, clothing were custom made by couturiers. Every piece of clothing was designed and made uniquely to fit the customer's needs. But by the time fast fashion mass production started, clothes lost their unique value and have begun to be treated as disposable utilitarian commodities. Since then, the way of looking at fashion has stayed pretty much the same and this life style and way of mass consumption we are used to now, is making the consumers ignorant of the ugly truth behind these "disposable" products: hours and hours of underpaid labor, with terrible working environments, no social security, no health care and no food. This often leads to injuries, and make the workers get ill from being kept in crowded spaces, and even sometimes this leads the workers from these industries to commit suicide. This is why I planned that if my collection is going….....
