Group members feel free to experiment with behavioral changes and discuss deep secrets without fear of judgment or reprisal. Members are also exposed to the struggles of others. This can build empathy and understanding, reduce the feeling of being alone and help spark new ideas on how people can handle their own difficulties." (p. 1)

This points of the value of different types of group treatment strategies, which can center on grouping together individuals of shared or overlapping needs. Over the course of our research, we have encountered an array of different group types which connote the contextualizing milieu by which treatment is designed. For instance, goal-setting groups can help to raise collective and concrete markers of treatment success around which members may coalesce to support one another. Or relaxation groups may simply group together individuals sharing the common need for stress management strategies. Community groups, more commonly established through outpatient processes, can help to group together individuals in geographical proximity to one another, creating a social context for shared support. As our evaluation finds generally, proper training of mental health professionals is needed to facilitate any of these milieus.

Threats: The primary threats to effective group therapy management for our facility are the potential for volatile patients to disrupt group sessions and the incapacity of personnel to effectively diffuse such disruptions.
We have found that the lack of training and a shortage of personnel with applicable experience in the area of group therapy have both contributed to a susceptibility on our part to the agenda of willful patients. Because we lack adequate training, the ambition of a patient to behave in a way that is disruptive will usually be successful. Here, our personnel will be required to direct attention toward milieu management rather than the therapeutic programming to be conducted there within.

Conclusion:

This provides us with the primary recommendation that leadership training be conducted among staff managers in order to raise education and knowledge in the area of group treatment. By and large, there is a need to conduct a more comprehensive re-education throughout the facility with respect to group therapy and specific tactics and techniques intended for treatment use there within. It may also be instructive to bring group therapy consultants on-board to assist in identifying and satisfying staffing needs.
