I can have all of those things but I must be willing to go out and get them on my own, and not expect people to give them to me for nothing. While I realize that some people do get things handed to them, I believe in working for what I want and making my own way.

Now I will be the first person on either side of my family to attend college, and in the land of opportunity that is the United States I know that college will be an amazing and very rewarding experience. One of the things that I think is most important, though, is not the college or even the country, but the spirit that my parents have instilled in me. My parents have influenced me so strongly that I know that I can realize my full potential and make them very proud. They have not only talked to me about what I should hold important, but they have also given me the freedom to make those kinds of decisions on my own.

I feel that my parents' influence and the examples that they set are things that I will always carry with me as I also learn to be my own person and make my own decisions in life. I won't forget what they have taught me because I see the value in what they have done and the dedication they have had to the tasks that they have been involved with. That is true of the work my father did on the pig farm and true of the work my mother did in the house and to raise me.
