Technology, Technique, and the Body," Edward Tanner begins by describing a Gary Larson cartoon in which dogs learn how to turn doorknobs. Tanner uses the humorous example to show how animals and human beings adapt to technology. Technology forces people to change the way they use their body. For example, computers have made people learn how to click on the mouse. Also, just as no one knew that dogs would learn how to operate doorknobs, sometimes technologies are used in ways that they were not designed for. All of us at some point have used an object for an unintended purpose, such as using a coin to pry open a beer bottle.
