The Major Functions of Political Parties

Political parties are nongovernmental institutions that serve the idea of political equality. Their purpose is to organize and give direction to the political desires of the people of a community. Political parties allow for a crucial link between a government's people and itself, while allowing people to be heard that might not otherwise be (Berman and Murphy).

The two most popular political parties in the United States are the Republican and Democratic Parties. The Republican Party was founded officially in 1854 in Ripon, Wisconsin. Among its core beliefs are that America is a constitutional republic, that America is the greatest nation in the world, and that a healthy nation must have religion play a significant role in its society (Uticensis). The Democratic Party is an older political party within the United States, and has core beliefs in equality, education, freedom of speech, economic responsibility, and fair taxes (CSUS.
edu).

2.0 Functions and Successes of the Political Parties

Texas used to be a largely democratic state, but at the turn of the century, the state saw a change to largely Republican. For the public, it is difficult to judge as to how well political parties function, mainly because the parties are not in the public eye at all times of the day. However, there are a few key subjects in which the public can use to judge how well their political parties are performing their functions (Texas Politics).

First, the financial strength of the political parties assists in indicating their organizational strength. Overall, the Republican Party has done an excellent job of fundraising and has had an overall strong financial health. At the same time, the democrats have sunken….....
