Anticipating Change

Quantum TGIF case

Macro -- The fact that the company holds beer parties for its employees makes it a target for liabilities. The corporate attorney acknowledges the importance of these events, but cannot ignore the probability of one of the employees causing an accident as a consequence of becoming intoxicated during the party.

Micro -- While thinking that the TGIF parties have a positive effect on their employees, Stan and Erin are unable to see the complexity of the situation. The reality is that their company's culture is disorganized and employees are not actually likely to perform better as long as they have access to such events. Employees simply consider that it would be in their best interest to take advantage of the opportunity to become intoxicated at the company's expense, but still experience great suffering as they struggle to perform in accordance with the management's expectations.


Causes:

The company has seen much progress in recent years as its employees have all contributed to making it possible for it to thrive in the industry. Even with this, the benefits coming along with these successes entail more complex issues. The company does not have enough employees and it attempts to compensate for this problem by exploiting them. Along with the management, some of the employees considered that it would be in their company's best interest to organize after-work parties that would help its members blow off steam.
