Effectiveness within an organization is a measure of how effective the organization is in achieving the outcomes or goals it has for itself. An organization's effectiveness is also interdependent upon its set of morals, ethics, and ability to community appropriately. Effectiveness is important in different ways for different organizations because of the criteria used to judge (e.g. A non-profit aid group might have a different benchmark than a new accounting firm). It is sometimes difficult for an organization to be effective due to external factors, lack of clear definition and focus, and internal dynamics.

What is the example most outstanding in your mind that accurately illustrates the reality of a learning organization?

A learning organization that almost continually transforms itself and encourages the intellectual growth of its members is probably Apple, Inc. In two eras, 1976-1980 and 2005+. In both of these eras, innovation and out of the box thinking was primary, and the vast and even if simplistic now, changes made advanced the level of expectations from both the public and other technical organizations. Not without critics, one can never say Apple rests on its laurels -- instead, it is continually pushing the envelope, most recently with the I-Pad.

What is the environment of most e-commerce companies? What does your analysis of their environment lead you to conclude about appropriate of e-commerce companies to their environment?

Most of the effectiveness of an e-commerce business, for instance Amazon.

However, physical inventory that must be moved from place to place (warehouses to consumer) is typically done through anonymous warehouses. Thus, the environment can be located anywhere; the physical structure not as important as the efficiency and cost savings, and multiple delivery points (e.g. Netflix) also improves the relationship between the company and use of environmental factors to improve sales.

What can an organization do to have effect on controlling its environment? If you were president of a medium-sized state supported college, what strategy would you pursue and why?

In this paradigm, assuming the goal of the State and the Board was the same -- improve matriculation and professionalism of the college, I would partner with several companies to build centers of education that fit the needs of both organizations (e.g. center for engineering, center for environmental studies, center for computer graphics and gaming). These would be integrated into a system in which the most advanced technology could be used, while bumping up the virtual environment of the college to help reach more people in more places.
