Role of Conferences in the Strategic Development of the Hotel Industry

Case Study of Five Star Hotels in Jordan

Jordan has a rich cultural and archaeological patrimony. Many natural wonders and a particularly welcoming people make tourism a natural resource and vehicle for Jordan's economy.

Conversely, the Jordan tourism industry has demonstrated poor performance in past few years relative to the volatile political situation in the region.

Analyzing both the natural potential for success and the historical evidence for failure within Jordan's tourism industry through scientific research methodology may well provide viable alternatives to current widely held practices and beliefs.

This study will delve into the specific revenue producing areas of developing conferences in Jordan, how to conduct them, facility use and maximization, and the issues that surround successful delivery of this medium. This thesis will also provide data on the means of offering the world a safe, beautiful, and accommodating place to hold symposiums, summits, conferences, workshops, and conventions for business, economic, governmental, and even private use.

Challenges - The Core Issues

In order to compete in the tourism and hospitality arena, certain criteria must be met.

The facility must contain a suitably sized, comfortable, and reasonably adaptable conference hall or auditorium.

The location of facilities must be balanced between the Central Business Districts (CBDs) of the host cities - important for ease of access to a visitor's need for local goods and services - and out-of -- the way tourist sites - equally important to lure the attendees 'off-hours' attention and revenue.

The host site must be able to provide the services of a competent, responsible, and high-level service oriented staff. The staff must be able to coordinate the event or function, manage the inevitable problems arising from such events, and be empowered to offer above-average customer service in order to satisfy the event planner and individual participant's ROI (return on investment).

The location for events must be able to offer reasonable safety, comfort, amenities, and resources in order to attract worldwide attention and travelers.

Research

The research for this premise will involve examining the current situation and condition of five-star hotels in Jordan. The factors to be measured will include, but not be limited to: facilities and services, locations, cultural, economic, and societal.

With a goal of not merely coming to "the table" with the problem, this work will attempt to provide viable solutions for upgrading, implementing, and managing the necessary elements to successfully attracting the business and tourism trades.

Beside the obvious benefit to Jordanian economy, balanced research will require thorough examination into the theory and practice of conference hosting and tourism. Value-based research into governmental reports, Olympic planning, and "think-tank" value-based economic growth will permit the approach "to the table" with heavily laden hands carrying informed suggestions for improvement.

Additionally, case studies, qualitative indices, procedural dissemination, and public opinion surveys will be enlisted to provide a holistic view of the issue.

Methodology

This study will use a carefully designed survey, applying appropriate versions of the fundamental questionnaire and distributing it to participants, managing and coordinating decision-makers, and theorists in tourism as a viable means of economic infusion.

Where appropriate, interviews will be substituted for the survey.

Analytically, the study will take support from the collated findings of the surveys and reliable statistical analyses such as the Special Package for Social Sciences (SPSS), Cluster Analysis, and Multiple Regression Analysis.
