In terms of design, it should not be forgotten that Toyota pioneered the world's first mass produced petrol/electric car, the Prius, which went on sale in Japan in 1997.

It is also a noteworthy point that the company does not see hybrid technology as a sideline or an interim move to impress with its intention and capableness, but rather sees this technology as, "... A viable, stand alone technology that can improve the efficiency of most fuels."

Toyota is responsible for the development of the Eco-VAS (Eco-Vehicle Assessment System) in 2005, which is "...a valuable environment management tool for those responsible for vehicle development and allows comprehensive assessment at each stage of the development process of the impact of each vehicle on the environment through its life cycle.

There is little doubt that the Toyota Company has met many of its stated intentions with regard to environmental issues, global warming and CO2 reduction.

What is impressive is the way that the company has accepted the challenge of environmental responsibility on so many different levels, including improved technology and design, training and public warenss. The example of Toyota is one that could possibly be emulated by other companies in this industry and others.

Another significant aspect is that these initiatives have been taken without detrimental affect to the bottom line. In fact, all indications are that these strategies have improved the companies market worth; for example, "Reducing waste of all kinds increased Toyota's efficiency and reduced its costs."

The area that possibly requires more attention in the policies of the company is the need to increase pubic awareness of the issues at stake. While Toyota is involved in this area, there is still a long way to go before this aspect is fully accepted and acted upon by the pubic to the.....
