Ethics of Repealing and Replacing the Affordable Care Act (ACA)




Before President Donald Trump was elected into office, he promised to repeal and replace the ACA within the first 100 days in office. This was probably a ray of hope for all the people suffering under the act. Surprisingly, however, the term 'suffering' is subjective. It is not yet clear whether the majority of citizens prefer the existing health care system or not. According to statistics, the number of people who view the system as unfavorable almost matches the number of those who view it as favorable. This leaves one question; is repealing and replacing the act an ethical and viable solution?



The Act offers a number of benefits and disadvantages in almost equal measures. For instance, many have complained about the high cost of insurance plans and limited access to services. However, citizens are enjoying benefits such as coverage for pre-existing conditions, maternal care, ambulance services and children have access to medical services. The ACA was to be replaced by a different Act commonly referred to as 'Trumpcare'. Unfortunately, the general masses and politicians seem to be divided concerning the repealing process. Only 35% feel that the Trump government should work harder to replace 'Obamacare' while the rest (majority) feel that the existing government should work harder to improve the existing system work. The former seem to be driven by contemptuous competition rather than the well-being of citizens (Lyles 2017).

The most unethical bit about the whole process of repealing and replacing ACA is interwoven in the political fabric of the country. The Congress is currently divided into two main sections: democrats and republicans. One group supports President Trump who fiercely condemned 'Obamacare' while condemning the leadership of Barrack Obama. The other group supports Obama and therefore voting for President Trump's bill into law would seem disloyal. These silent political wars are not in line with ethics because the main purpose of repealing ACA….....
