Social, Cultural, and Historical Positioning Effecting or Altering Hegel's Contentions Concerning Self-Consciousness and Recognition

The abstractness found in the book makes it difficult for one to understand what the author is referring to at times. This might put off a reader, but reading it over and over again is the key to understanding the text and meaning. Hegel talks about master and slaves (Pippin, 1989), which makes it hard for one to understand or see who is being referred to, and if the meaning is based on the past period of slavery or it can be applied to our current social relations. This section has been translated in various ways by different people mainly because of its abstractness. There is a possibility of one looking at it from the early stage of life during the period of masters and slaves because it describes the evolution of consciousness throughout the course of civilization, which culminates to our modern and current society. However, there is a possibility that Hegel was referring to how individuals develop psychologically, or the process of individuals developing their psychology. Therefore, the images being portrayed by Hegel of the Master and slave could be used as metaphors indicating the different positions that individuals find themselves in throughout life. There could be times one objectifies themselves as master and other times as slave.

Societal implications have an impact on the way an individual would perceive themselves. Based on the image a person thinks others hold of them, the individual would come to learn more about themselves. However, the image society portrays of the individual could result in them struggling to identify with the individual since they feel different and would prefer to act in the way they feel. However, they are forced to act in the image that society has for them. There will always be struggles provided there is an exploitation of class by another individual or individuals. The case presented by Hegel of master and slave does indicate that the slaves felt objectified to observe and follow the master, but deep down they would prefer to be masters of their own. The black men felt a need to be recognized within society instead of being treated like animals or something that does not have its own mind and consciousness.
