The United Nations is an international organization; it is usually referred to as an international governmental organization (IGO), it may also be referred to as an intergovernmental organization. It is an organization that adopts a multilateral approach.

Long governmental organizations may try to exert an influence in the global arena in a number of ways, including political advocacy, seeking to influence the actions of governments in different countries. The NGOs may use public relations exercises in order to highlight the actions they are taking, as well as more direct actions, such as protest. A good example may be seen in Greenpeace, and the way in which they ship the rainbow Warrior is used to generate publicity, which highlights the cause of the organization by getting the images into the media.

2. Use a current event to demonstrate how transnational criminal organizations try to exert influence in the global arena.

Transnational criminal organizations may seek to exert an influence on global arena through their actions. The way in which funds are used to support particular organizations demonstrates the way in which there is political intent behind the leaders of transnational criminal organizations. For example, Al Qaeda is funded mainly through criminal activities undertaken in the international arena, which has been used to provide funds for different activities, including bombing and terrorist actions, as well as providing the resources needed to train the terrorists. The criminal organizations are seeking to exert a political influence in the area, in order to gain an outcome they wish.

The main purpose of the United Nations is to maintain international peace and security, through the utilization of collective measures that have been put in place in order to reduce or remove threat to the peace, and taking actions in order to suppress aggressive acts between states. Furthermore, the organization promotes family relationships between nation states, equality between nations, and supports different types of cooperation, including cultural, social, and economic.
