Supply chain design needed for a tailgate party with 40 people will not be overly complex, but each of the steps that are involved as outlined below are critical to the successful outcome of the event as discussed below.

What are the inputs to and outputs of a supply chain?

The inputs to the tailgate party include 40 pounds of hamburger meat, 20 bratwursts, and 20 baby-back ribs. Other menu items will include lettuce and tomatoes (for the burgers), cole slaw, potato salad, beverages (beer, soft drinks and juices). In addition, assorted condiments such as ketchup, salsa and mustard will also be included. Likewise, a portable grill, 20 pounds of charcoal and lighter fluid and a lighter will also be needed.

The outputs to this supply chain will be the completed meals that are served to the 40 attendees. The supply chain operations reference model (SCOR) provides a useful structure in which to ensure that these inputs are available to produce the requisite outputs.

Why do you suggest this supply chain structure in the given situation? What are its benefits?

According to Bolstorff (2003), the SCOR model has been adopted by companies of all sizes and types around the world in recent years for good reason.

Therefore, the plan part of the SCOR model will include sourcing the ingredients for the tailgate party 2 to 3 days prior to the event. In order to facilitate preparation at the site, the hamburger meat will be preformed into patties and sealed in plastic wrap to ensure freshness. Likewise, the lettuce and tomatoes will be sliced and stored in plastic bags preparatory to the party. Delivery will be accomplished using the author's personally owned vehicle. Any defective products identified prior to or during the event will be returned to the author for refund from the commercial place of purchase.

What strategic issues or challenges do you anticipate? What measures do you recommend to overcome these challenges?
