Vision, Senses and Motor Control

The visual cortex, also known as the striated cortex due to its many layers, is the primary system responsible for the first part of our visual processing. From there information travels to the brain via a secondary cortex which allows the brain to translate what we have seen into a meaningful concept. The "first stop shop" of the visual cortex includes the major structures identified on this diagram, after passing through the outer eye, pupil and retina.

The Optic Nerve is a bundle of nerve fibers carrying visual messages from the retina to the brain. Via millions of fibers in the optic nerve, input of light and electrical signals from each eye and the outside world travel and meet the brain at the optic chiasm ("Function: visual pathway," ). This is the area where signals from both eyes meet to form one image, which the brain translates into a 3d image.

Each optic tract contains and transmits information from one eye, and together sends a completed picture to the brain. The Lateral Geniculate nucleus, which receives information from other senses aside for the eyes, likely combines all the information in order to form a completed picture. It helps the visual system focus on the most important information in order to accurately process what it sees. It is also a station that refines certain receptive fields.
