Business Ecosystem:

Business ecosystem is a strategic planning framework through which an organization's stakeholders work through cooperation and competition to enhance products' sales. The main stakeholders included in this framework are suppliers, distributors, and customers. In some cases, business ecosystem is considered as a network of interlinked firms that includes suppliers and distributors who work together towards supplying or harmonizing the main components of value proposition. The value propositions are mainly centered on providing benefits for customers through the products and/or services.

The development of an organizational system that is centered on a core product usually enhances the value of the product to the user, which in turn contributes to increased use of the product. Notably, business ecosystems contribute to the emergence of strong entry barriers for new competitors since they can only enhance or duplicate the existing core product in the market. Moreover, the new entrants must compete against the existing network of suppliers that form the system. However, all businesses function within an ecosystem because they operate in a wider network of related competitors who provide certain products and services.

As a leading firm in its industry both locally and internationally, Wal-Mart has continued to adopt necessary measures to promote and enhance the success of the company, particularly in its ecosystem. Given the diverse nature of its business practices, Wal-Mart has developed into a leading company in its industry because of its approach to its business ecosystem. One of the approaches that the firm has undertaken towards its ecosystem is through its procurement system and emphasis on increasingly specialized stores in the recent past. The procurement system has been developed based on the ecosystem to enhance organizational performance and its operations within its network.
