However, the trenches were often muddy and filled with water, and they were no match for the newly designed tanks that became a standard part of warfare.

This was a very different war than the world had been used to. There were many more inventions, such as airplanes, tanks, and new types of explosives and weapons helped turn both sides into very efficient killing machines, and hundreds of thousands of lives were lost before the war was over. Industrialization also meant that the men fighting could be transported quickly and efficiently from area to area, and they could receive continual supplies, as well. Another historian writes, "A century of industrialization meant that the Germans, French and British could each keep millions of men under arms on the Western Front - clothed, fed and free from lethal epidemic diseases, day and night, all the year round without respite" (Badsey). Thus, World War One create a whole new kind of warfare that was far more deadly and could last almost indefinitely, which this war seemed to do.

The war was also important in that it showed how trench warfare was inefficient and not the way to win a war. The men could stay hold up in the trenches for days, weeks, or months, and some did. The trenches stretched across Europe from the English Channel to Switzerland, and they remained there throughout the duration of the war. This type of warfare led to a slow and tedious war that left a mark on the men who fought it. The conditions were often terrible, and the soldiers developed illnesses such as trench foot (from the constant mud and moisture in the trenches) and pneumonia.

Many men were overcome with "shell shock" from the constant barrage of shells and cannon shot around them, which was about the only way to dislodge men from the trenches. This was a long, drawn out war that initially people believed would be over in a few months, and it changed the world, because it showed how efficient and deadly new technology could be, and it showed how allies could band together to create war over unusual and even trivial circumstances. It did not end all wars; it actually was the foundation for another war in Europe 30 years later.

In conclusion, World War One was significant for a number of reasons. It was the first truly modern war, and it showed what new technologies could accomplish in the field of warfare. It helped introduce new items like the airplane and the tank to the battlefield, and it changed the face of Europe forever. At the end of the war, Germany was supposed to be so debilitated that it could never rise again to world dominance, but that did not work, as Germany was the initial aggressor in the beginning of World War Two, as well......
