Role of Testing and Assessment in EducationTesting and assessment are needed in education because they serve as a way to gauge student learning and progress. The main objective is to gather data that can inform teachers about what they need to do based on where students are; tests are used for making educational decisions, guiding instruction, and so on. These tools help educators address questions like How well have students learned the curriculum? Are they ready to move on to the next level? Which students need additional support or intervention? Testing and assessment thus act as means for seeing the strengths and weaknesses in teaching methods and in student learning (Cohen et al., 2022). However, achievement tests and aptitude tests are not the same thing, and this paper will compare the two as well as discuss in detail the role of testing and assessment.Testing vs. AssessmentIt is important to distinguish between testing and assessment, as they serve different purposes in education. Testing is the process of administering standardized tools to measure competencies, usually statistically. Assessment, however, is a broader concept that can include a variety of methods to evaluate student learning (Cohen et al., 2022).
