Weapons Related to Physical and Personal Security

Physical security in the words of Linstone and Mitroff (1994) "has always been a foremost right demanded by the individual from the society" (p.329). As the author further points out, the relevance of physical security cannot be overstated given the escalating levels of crime in our cities and, indeed, everywhere else. It is for this reason that security personnel bear arms. It is also for this reason that the citizens of this beloved country have the right to not only keep but also bear arms -- a right recognized and protected by the Constitution.

In basic terms, weapons related to personal and physical security can be categorized into two: i.e. lethal and nonlethal weapons. To begin with, nonlethal weapons are those weapons that are not considered deadly or capable of causing instant death or serious body harm. One of the companies that offers for sale a wide range of non-lethal weapons mostly to the civilian consumer is ARMA USA. A key product offered for sale by the company is the Arma-100 bean bag gun, which according to the company is ideal for those "that feel uncomfortable with owning a hand gun" (ARMA USA, 2013).

Other nonlethal weapons include but they are not limited to pepper sprays, tasers, stun guns, and mace sprays. While stun guns and tasers essentially make use of an electric shock to incapacitate the target (albeit temporarily), mace and pepper sprays are irritants that when sprayed to a target cause significant irritation and/or pain. Stun guns and tasers are collectively referred to as electric weapons.

Unlike a nonlethal weapon, a lethal weapon is capable of causing death or grievous bodily harm when utilized. In that regard therefore, lethal weapons include but they are not limited to shotguns and rifles, spiked batons, revolvers, nightsticks, etc. Shotguns, rifles, and revolvers are known the world over for their lethality and in most places, their issuance is strictly controlled in an attempt to curb misuse. Tailored to expel a projectile at high velocity, shotguns, rifles, and revolvers are regarded most effective when it comes to tackling intruders and other dangerous criminal elements. Unlike nonlethal weapons, the harm occasioned by lethal weapons is mostly fatal.
