For Mrs. Warren, modern meant breaking away from traditional values and making a profit from one of the oldest, yet most detestable business known to mankind. While many may question her morals, no one can question her individual success free from the constraints of any man. Vivie takes after her mother in that she refuses to be told what to do or how to behave by any societal norms. She is very unconventional in that she does not pursue romance and marriage and she is not the slightest bit interested in things that are beautiful because they do not provide for her a way to make money.

While she seems to be the epitome of modern in every sense of the word, she cannot accept what her mother does, allowing us to see the vast difference between definitions of modern. These two women are indeed modern but only according to their own definitions.
