We are extremely close.

The work of Judith Worrell (nd) states that children who have experienced sexual abuse are prone to "cognitive distortions, involving low self-esteem, self-blame, guilt, shame and distrust of others..." Additionally stated by Worrell is that posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been associated with childhood sexual abuse in a number of studies." (Worrell, nd) Primary symptoms identified are inclusive of:

1) Nightmares;

2) Sudden intrusive sensory memories of the abuse;

3) Emotional distress upon being reminded of the abuse;

4) Repetitive play that involves themes or memories of the abuse;

5) Avoidance of thoughts, feelings and activities that otherwise might remind the child of his or her victimization;

6) Sleep disturbances, 7) Irritable mood;

8) Attention and concentration problems; and 9) Hypervigilance to the possibility of being abused again. (Worrell, nd)

Other problems noted in Worrell's work include the presence of sexual behavior problems.

The effects of childhood sexual abuse are clearly of the nature that continue to effect these women on their lifespan however, for women who do seek and obtain assistance in the form of counseling and other psychological treatment, the impacts can be minimized and the chance for healing to occur does exist......
