("My History Lab") In order to gain influence with the Europeans, who had ignored American pleas for peace, Wilson came to the conclusion that America must involve itself in the war. It was Germany who was ruled by a totalitarian Kaiser, who attacked neutral ships on the open seas, while the Allies both were trading with, and owed a great deal of money to, America. Therefore, Wilson concluded that in order to fulfill his progressive world vision, the U.S. had to join the war on the side of the Allies. ("My History Lab")

Getting the American public to support joining the war was not going to be easy, for years Americans had harbored antiwar feelings and isolationism was a way of life for most. But once America joined the war on the side of the Allies, despite the large numbers of German-American citizens, anti-German sentiments emerged.
Americans of German decent, as well as German-owned businesses were targeted for violence. But many other Americans, primarily those who joined the military, began to have romantic visions of the war. Teddy Roosevelt, for instance, promoted a glorious view of war as a place where "great men could prove their greatness," and many felt it would "turn boys into men." ("My History Lab") The reality of modern industrialized warfare, however, proved to be more of a slaughterhouse than a clash of heroes. In terms of the nation as a whole, out of World War I the American economy became wealthy and the United States emerged as a real global power.
