Resultantly, a great portion of 1915 was controlled and dominated by Allied actions against the Ottomans. France and Britain reportedly launched an unsuccessful attack on the Dardanelles, and this campaign was subsequently followed by the British invasion of the Gallipoli Peninsula.

The longest battle of the war, the Battle of Verdun, resulted in approximately one million casualties. The Battle of the Somme reportedly resulted in an estimated one million casualties as well, but offered no real breakthrough for the Allies. The tank was introduced by the British, and was considered an effective weapon but there weren't enough of them to make a significant difference. In 1917, United States President Woodrow Wilson announced America's entrance into World War I as a 'crusade to make the world better'. Wilson is also credited with developing a program of progressive reform, asserting leadership on an international level and building a new world order.

The Allied Powers and Germany at the Palace of Versailles signed the Peace Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919. The treaty was started in early 1919 and was completed, reportedly after several months of intense negotiations.
The Treaty was presented to the German government and they had a limited amount of time to sign the treat. The Peace Treaty of Versailles was considered controversial and is still considered controversial today. The reason it was initially seen as controversial is because it was 'too great a departure' from then President Wilson's Fourteen Points and was seen by the British as too stringent and harsh in its treatment of Germany. What leads to the Peace Treaty being considered controversial today is that scholars often argue that the punitive nature of the terms of the Treaty were in support of the rise of the Third Reich in Germany in the 1930's and the Nazis, which then led to the start of World War II.

World War 1 ended after several years with Germany surrendering and Europe being decimated. An armistice or cease-fire agreement was signed which was made effective November 11, 1918. The armistice required German forces to leave their positions and go back to their home country. What was inevitably accomplished by the war, if anything remains debatable and questionable.
