Thesis: Using narrative voice, characterization, allusion, mood, conflict, tension, style, tone, imagery and diction, Bronte captures Heathcliff's complex emotional state as he nears a moment of profound revelation and redemption.

Until this point in the story, Heathcliff had become one-dimensional. The sorrow and pity the reader felt at his loss of Catherine have all but vanished because of the demon he has become. He has tormented Linton and Hareton, as well as Catherine. Yet now, Heathcliff lets bare his soul. Heathcliff refers to his feelings: " her presence invokes only maddening sensations." The mood becomes filled with depth and compassion, as his characterization becomes fuller and rounder, and alleviates much of the tension and conflict that had gripped the novel. His newfound self-awareness dawns, and he compares himself with Hercules and the mythical labors he has had to undergo. This allusion is paradoxical because while he uses it to draw attention to his suffering it also means that Heathcliff compares himself to a mythical hero, when he has hardly been a hero. He refers to "having brooded awhile on the scene he had just witnessed" and to "an absurd termination to my violent exertions." Then, Heathcliff outright claims, " train myself to be capable of working like Hercules, and when everything is ready and in my power, I find the will to lift a slate off either roof has vanished!" The narrative voice of third party persons like Ellen and Lockwood has vanished by this passage because for the first time in Wuthering Heights, Heathcliff is offered a chance to speak. This is the most the reader has heard from him, at least until his painful reunion with Catherine in the minutes before her death.

One of the most stunning elements of this part of the narrative is Heathcliff's realization of his anguish through visions of Catherine in the younger generation. "Nelly, there is a strange change approaching; I'm in its shadow at present." Here, Bronte capitalizes not only on narrative voice but also on mood. The mood shifts from the arrogance of comparing himself to Hercules to sorrow when Heathcliff states, "that appearance causes me pain, amounting to agony." Then, the central conflict or tension of the story is revealed clearly. "About HER I won't speak; and I don't desire to think; but I earnestly wish she were invisible." Bronte even stresses the word "HER" so that Heathcliff's voice can come through.….....
