A perfect example is Danica Patrick who has broken and established numerous records in the sport of auto racing -- a heavily male-dominated sport (Bernstein 2013). Her preconceived sex role did not stop her from succeeding greatly in this sport. The male perspective of racing has been redefined, as more and more women are now entering and succeeding in this sport. The roles that boys and girls think that they should follow are indeed rules that may be broken.
However, what is needed is a role model. Once one person has broken the path then others can follow. That is exactly what is occurring in sports. Gender affects how a sport is viewed, but it does not affect the character and values that are learned through playing......
