Lu Hsun's narrator in the story is another highlight of the work. The narrator is as fictional as the protagonist himself and maintains completely authority over the story's events. He chooses when and how an event would be described. In the first Chapter, he speaks in first person but turns to third person from there on. He describes himself as an -old-fashioned Chinese intellectual whose voice is at times smug because of his access to knowledge and his position as the writer.
He shows a range of emotions towards Ah Q. from condescension and criticism to sympathy and indifference, thus influencing the readers' and public's opinion of the protagonist and his wretched condition.

The 'True Story of Ah Q" is thus an amazing and unforgettable piece of literature that not only captures the mood and conditions of China in early 1900s but also manages to expose its soul and character. The hero whose name suggests he is a completely useless fellow is employed as a device to reveal the negative traits of Chinese people. Vain, pathetic and self-complacent, Ah Q. has now become a symbol of corruption, inaction and stupidity......
