The Germans defied the principles of war, harming not only their enemy, but themselves and as a result they were finally defeated because of their expenditure of manpower and equipment during this offensive. (Parker, 92)

This battle was different from others fought by the Germans during WWII, in that the weather, the delay and the long battle used so much of the resources of the German Army that, even though they won the battle, they lost the war. Afterward they were never able to recoup their damages or fight the way they had earlier.
They lost too much in resources, human and material. This helped bring an early end to the war with Hitler.

This battle was also different from the other battles with the Germans in that most of the casualties occurred during the first three days and was the most bloody battle that American forces experienced in World War II, with 19000 Americans dying, more than had ever been sacrificed in a single battle up to that time.
