Building More Trust between Patients & DoctorsEncouraging empathy in the medical field to strengthen the bond between physicians and their patients is important in health care. As Casey et al. (2018) explain, patients often feel as though their doctors were simply seeing them as data—sources of information that are decoded by the medical professionals who then go about selecting the right treatment based on said data. It is easy for doctors to forget that they are dealing with human beings—after all, they are taught in medical school to focus on encoding and decoding, data, and interventions. Yet, this approach does not facilitate the strengthening of trust between patient and doctor. This paper will explain why it is important to have that trust and how empathy can facilitate its construction.Building trust between patients and doctors is essential for effective healthcare. When patients trust their doctor, they are more likely to comply with treatment plans, follow through with recommended lifestyle changes, and participate in their own health care. Additionally, trust encourages open communication, which can help the doctor gain a better understanding of the patient's needs and provide personalized treatment. Ultimately, trust between patients and doctors is important for ensuring that the patient receives the best possible care.In order to build trust between doctors and patients, empathy must be incorporated into the clinical process. To do this, medical personnel should receive empathy training, both in medical school and throughout their careers. In addition, communication protocols should be put in place that prioritize the patient-doctor relationship. This could include measures such as doctors spending more time with their patients, implementing policies that focus on the patient's comfort and well-being, and rewarding doctors who understand the patient's unique needs (Serwint & Stewart, 2019).
