This philosophy behind this method is that bullying occurs because bystanders allow it to happen and that other children help to facilitate bullying either by looking the other way or by encouraging the bully through either laughter or praise or some other form of negative reinforcement. This technique prevents the bully from engaging in further attacks on a potential victim in that it recruits a veritable army around the victim -- a form of collective support for reinforcement and assistance.

Educating parents is another way to appropriately deal with bullies. Parents are often unaware of the fact that when a child is bullied, they will often feel deeply scared and ashamed. The fear and shame can often translate to the child not saying anything about the situation or about what's going on or how they feel. Experts encourage parents to talk to their kids everyday about how their day has gone and to truly pay close attention to the details (Greatschools, 2007).
Experts urge parents to not be blind to the signs of bullying; some kids engage in a code of silence for fear of being a tattletale or worse (Greatschools, 2007). However, even if a child engages in this code of silence, physical manifestations of bullying can occur: headaches, stomachaches, and other issues.

Work with your child's school. Some schools have forced students to sign a zero-tolerance contract for bullying and these contracts are strongly enforced by teachers, school leaders and the greater community. Too many adults sit on their hands and act like there isn't a proper solution to bullying which is available to everyone.
