("The Candidate")

What evidence can you cite from the film about name recognition and the incumbency effect?

The film is showing how name recognition is one of the most important factors in linking a particular candidate with different ideas. McKay is using his name to create an initial following. However, as he becomes more popular, is when people begin to question why his father has not endorsed him. After the debate, the press ignores the fact that McKay did not follow the agreed upon format. Instead, they are concentrating on how the former Governor has appeared to endorse his son. When in reality, he is only there to congratulate him. ("The Candidate")

The incumbency effect occurs throughout the film with Jamon having a clear advantage over the other candidate. This leads to many individuals refusing to run against him based upon the belief they will not win. These factors encourage McKay to run. As he can say what he wants and it will not have an effect on the race.

Do you see any similarities between the senate race in the film and the previous Governor's race in New York? Why?

In the New York Governor's race, name recognition and the lack of substantive proposals are drawing similarities to the film. This is occurring with Andrew Cuomo (the son of the former Governor Mario Cuomo) running against Carl Paladino. During the election, a poll was taken by Gallop of potential voters. They found that 58% believed no party is addressing the real issues. This is paralleling the movie by showing how both sides have pre-scripted answers. At the same time, the son of the former Governor running is very similar to the events in the film. ("The Candidate") (Wiessner)
