It was also good in that it allowed the success oriented manager to expand upon the manager's role.

The manager's role, as stated by Kim, is not necessarily to raise prices, but rather to focus on the big picture. If the manager is successful in that, the manager can also be the person who will create new demand for the product. Kim is all about creating new product, which will create new demand.

Kim left out a couple of interesting, and potentially conflicting items that he could have covered, and quite easily. Chan skipped the fact that (currently) technology is so great and information so instantaneously available that the experts who tout different methods of being successful, could ultimately end up imitating Kim's methods.

That is what is ironic about Kim's approach; that if he is successful at assisting companies in achieving success, he will probably be emulated, which is the exact opposite from what he is espousing.

The article does not, however, bring that to bear. Instead, the article states, "Blue ocean strategy is about creating new demand - and a new industry altogether instead of benchmarking against competition and dividing up the industry." (Kim 2006-page 21)

Kim strikes out into the cold, hard business world, creates his own niche, and achieves adulation and success throughout the industry, thereby proving his very theory. Most experts would call that being 'successful'.
