book of Proverbs provides an instructional guide for all persons willing to deepen their connection with God. As educators, we have an obligation to apply Christian principles to our own lives -- both the personal and our professional dimensions of our existence. By applying Biblical principles to our personal life, we become instructive role models and mentors who embody the teachings of Christ. We avoid debauchery and other signs of sin, and we lead our students and coworkers toward a spiritual existence. Our personal life should be a microcosm of our public life, which is why immoral behavior at home or in private is never something we can hide. "The way of the guilty is devious, but the conduct of the innocent is upright," (Proverbs 21:8). With a Christian worldview, educational leaders are in a position to offer moral and spiritual instruction built on a firm foundation of wisdom and Biblical principles.

Applying Biblical principles to our professional life, we become Christian leaders. Christian leaders are beacons of light to others in the community. We help all families and children in need, and offer spiritual guidance and sustenance from within the ethical frameworks of our positions. Our multiple roles define us as Christian leaders, because we are at once formal educators dedicated to evidence-based practice and because we are also informal instructors in how to live an ethical, spiritual life. "In the Lord's hand the king's heart is a stream of water that he channels toward all who please him," (Proverbs 21:1).

The book of Proverbs often directly addresses the profession of teaching as being a uniquely blessed and important role in society. "Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it," (Proverbs 22:6). Education has the potential to plant seeds in the minds, hearts, and souls of children, who can then go forth into the world and blossom. All education should ultimately have as its core goal the transformation of the child -- or adult in continuing education -- into a spiritual being with something to contribute to the world. Education should bring people closer to God and to living a Godly life.
