17. Johann calls you and says that Billy smells and he needs a shower. If you don't move Billy to another ward, Johann will sign himself out. Explain in details what you would do to resolve this cross cultural situation.

I would tell Johann that we are doing all we can to ensure Billy's hygiene and that if his body odor continued to bother Johann that we can move him to another room or ward in the hospital.

18. There seems to be a language and cultural barrier that's blocking effective communication occurring between these two gentlemen. Considering they are both your clients, what strategies would you put in place to improve this situation?

The best way to remedy the situation would be to introduce the two patients to each other. A handshake, some eye contact, and small personal interactions can go a long way toward eliminating prejudices and stereotypes and enhancing interpersonal communications.

19. How would you evaluate the effectiveness of the communication strategies that you have employed in this complicated scenario?

The effectiveness of my approach would be measured first by its impact on Billy's psychological health and well-being. If he seems calm, if he can smile, if he seems relaxed: these would be signs that the techniques being used are effective.

If he continues to appear anxious then we might need to change our approach. Similarly, Billy's level of cooperativeness with medical staff would signal his level of trust in us and in our health care system as a whole. Finally, the effects on friends and family members who might be with Billy also signal how well we have done to ease the cultural and language barriers that would otherwise impact treatment.

20. In what way would you use technology to assist you in the above situation with the two gentlemen?

Technology can be used in a number of different ways to ease the tension between the two gentlemen. Turning on the television to a movie or a show they both enjoy might help. Offering them video game consoles could also help if they were interested in playing to pass the time. If they appeared to have different tastes in music, television, and leisure activities they could each be offered portable headsets to listen to music or television. Finally, technology offers direct communication aids such as online dictionaries or surfing the Web to learn about each others' culture......
