Culturally Competent Teaching in Healthcare

As patients want to adjust back into some sense of normalcy after a hospital visit, patient education becomes crucial in empowering them within the context of their own recovery. In modern healthcare practice, patient education is crucial out of the necessity for effective learning strategies and interventions as a method to promote the best quality of care and optimal health outcomes. Providing the best level of support to patients through the most effective patient education strategies is one of the most difficult objectives of the modern nurse, because of the unique individual nature of each particular patient.

Patient Assessment

In this particular case, the nurse must educate a first generation Latino male on how to irrigate his own colostomy. The patient is approximately 19 years of age. As a young adult, he is a much stronger problem solving and analytical thinking skills when compared to teens younger than him. Thus, there is a strong level of independence and analytical capabilities, making it easier to instruct the individual on how to conduct the process himself.

Anticipated Learning Needs

Educational strategies must be tailored to catering to the lower language capability level witnessed in this particular patient. This particular patient is Spanish-speaking. Thus, gaps in English proficiency may be a potential barrier to learning . This will mean the incorporation of Spanish language within the lesson plan, as to ensure the patient clearly understands the process and the individual pieces that correlate with irrigating the colostomy.

Yet, there is a need to further assess potential risk factors that may demand the presence of another family member or friend in case a third party needs to be a part of the process of conducting the procedure. Asking the patient if he lives alone or if there would be anyone who he would also like to learn the process in the event that they may need to conduct the procedure in the future.

Goal Statements

There are two primary goals considered in this educational strategy. It is first important to educate the patient on how and when the process should be conducted. Stressing the importance of routine and following crucial steps will be major elements in meeting this goal. Secondly, it will be important to teach the patient what problems to recognize if they arise that would need further medical care or attention in order to avoid any further complications with the procedure outside of the safe learning environment of the hospital.
