Linguistics-Based Intervention Plan

English Language Learner Information: Native Spanish speaker, male

Age/Grade: 7th grade

Overall English Proficiency Level: Moderate

English Reading Level (if doing a reading intervention): 7th

English Writing Level (if doing a writing intervention): 5th

Targeted Area of Weakness in Reading or Writing

(e.g., grammatical structures, use of reading skills and strategies, writing structure or organization, vocabulary acquisition, etc.)

Grammatical structures -- syntax

Evidence from Linguistics in Regards to that area of weakness (Summarize here in bullet point form.)

• Student shows limited ability to identify parts of speech

• Student does not link words appropriately in writing

• Student does not use phrases properly

• The goal is for the student to acquire understanding of syntax

Plan Using Evidence from Linguistics to Address Weakness (indicate in parentheses where procedures match up with the evidence from linguistics delineated above)

The procedure to teach syntactical skills to the ELL will begin with the teacher showing how to diagram a simple, compound and complex sentence on the white board (this will connect with the student's inability to identify parts of speech -- the teacher will identify parts of speech as the sentences are being diagrammed and show visually in the diagram how the parts of speech connect to one another syntactically).

The student will then be tasked with diagramming sentences that the teacher gives (this will link to the student's problems using words appropriately -- the student will see how words go together as he diagrams them on the board and the teacher will give immediate feedback while watching).

As the sentences grow more complex, the student will begin to understand how diagramming helps the syntax of sentences to be illustrated (this will link with the student's improper use of phrases) (Freeman, Freeman, 2014).

Through repeated practice of this intervention, the student will acquire an understanding of syntax (this links with Krashen (2003) on how acquiring is a process of immersion).

Materials: The materials used for this intervention are to include diagramming worksheets and white board for in-class diagramming.

Procedure: The procedure will involve helping the student to better understand syntax through diagramming sentences. The teacher will show the student how to diagram sentences on the white board and how the various parts of speech interact. The student will then have sentences to diagram on the worksheet.
